Koh Chang and Trat in the Rainy Season

The rainy season is the peak season for visiting waterfalls in full flow, and the mountainous terrain of Koh Chang means it has some of the most beautiful falls in the region. Out of at least five notable falls the most famous is the three-step Than Mayom Falls. Rocks on the first and third steps bear the engraved initials of Kings Rama VI, Rama VII and Rama V. A pathway of about 400m, leads through a durian orchard, to the waterfall. Swimming is allowed and watching sunrise from here can be amazing. Klong Plu is the most popular and frequently visited of the waterfalls as it is close to both Klong Prao and Kai Bae beaches. It is about a 20 minute hike to the waterfall which is on 3 levels.
You can also visit the mainland of Trat province and see the gem market at Bo Rai (Trat and Chantaburi are famed for ruby mining). At this time of year the provinces of the eastern seaboard are laden with fruit – including rambutan, mangosteen and durian. Many orchards are open to visitors where you can eat freshly picked fruit.

It is also the season when the beaches are quiet so you can see Koh Chang in its most unspoilt state. It is good to know it doesn’t rain all the time – so you can also have all the fun of a normal beach holiday.
